True Spring Color Palette Makeup Tutorial
What is True Spring?
True spring or warm spring is the primary spring colour palette in the seasonal colour analysis flow chart. Warm spring is distinguished by having a warm undertone, lighter colour values, and higher chroma. Spring colours have a higher concentration of yellow, giving the true spring colour palette its warmer undertone and light value, as warmer tones have a brighter quality than blue cool-toned colours.
Complimentary Colour Palettes
Warm spring shares its warmth with neighbouring colour palettes, bright spring/clear spring and light spring/soft spring; however, these colour palettes also neighbour with more cool-toned palettes, which lend these spring colour palettes an element of neutrality. Bright spring, also known as clear spring, neighbours with bright/clear winter, which is a cool-neutral season, and bright spring differs from true spring as it has warm-neutral colours, high saturation, and higher levels of contrast. On the other side of true spring is light spring, sometimes referred to as soft spring, and similarly to bright spring, light spring neighbours a cool-neutral season by way of light/bright summer, which gives light spring the lightest colour value, and moderate chroma brightness.
Each season on the seasonal flow chart has an opposite seasonal palette, sometimes called a sister colour palette. Spring colour palettes contrast with autumn on the classic four-season flow chart, and when the flow chart is expanded to the 12-season flow chart, true spring is the opposite of true autumn. True autumn or warm autumn is similar to true autumn as their colours are warm-toned; however, true autumn has a more muted chroma and darker colour value.
True Spring Makeup Look
True spring or warm spring makeup looks are often more subtle as the fundamental aspects of the colour palette are warm-toned colours, moderately light colour value, and slightly brighter colour chroma. When we look at these three key points individually and relate them to creating a makeup look, we can conclude
Warm-toned neutrals are the foundational colours
Darker colours are used in moderation
Create contrast with brightens and finish
Utilize True Spring’s Sister Palettes to Create Interest
True Springs's colour palette is filled with lively colours that can be used to create a multitude of makeup looks; however, sometimes we want to experiment with different looks as trends change, and if you are anything like me, then you have probably purchased some trendy beauty or fashion item, only to realize it doesn’t look as fabulous as you were hoping it would. A prime example I can think of here in spring 2023 is the hype around bright bubblegum pink blushers like the Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Blush in 001 Pink. Yes, there are ways to make a colour like this work for purely warm-toned colour palettes like true spring and true autumn, but in my experience working with makeup clients, most people want colours that are easy to wear the give them the effect they desire. So, instead of purchasing an uber cool-toned pink blush, then you might want to borrow from your bright spring or light spring colour palettes and choose a warm-neutral pink blush like Too Faced Cloud Crush Blurring Blush in Golden Hour (bright spring) or Essence Pure Nude Baked Blush in Pink Flush (light spring).
Warm autumn is also a palette to consider borrowing from, especially when creating a look with something about the look that feels too intense and you want something more subdued to help balance the overall feeling over your makeup look. Some great examples of products from the warm autumn that warm spring can borrow like the Juvia’s Place The Coffee Shop Eyeshadow Palette, Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Powder Bronzer, or MAC Powder Blush in Melba; however, if I feel like borrowing from true autumn excels in the category of nude or muted lip colours, and my favourites are MAC Matte Lipstick in Yash and NYX Butter Gloss Non-Sticky Lip Gloss in Madeleine.
